The Diploma in English (Extension) is a one – year course of study conducted by the Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

The course has been designed on par with Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework of the Ministry of Higher Education and equates SLQL 3 (NVQL 5)

Duration:

One Year/ Two Semesters

Credit Weightage:

30 credits

Aims & objectives:

•To provide opportunities to those who aspire to learn English.
• To improve the participants’ productive ability, self-confidence and clarity in the use of
English so that they could function in a work environment. • To help the participants to lay a strong foundation to pursue advanced English Courses leading to higher Diplomas and Degrees.
• To help participants to prepare themselves for internationally recognized English Courses such as IELTS, TOEFL and FCE (Cambridge).
• To provide an opportunity for the participants to obtain Diploma Level University English qualifications for their promotional prospects.

Entry Requirements:

A. An Advanced Certificate in English from a recognized university
OR
B. A candidate should have passed General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination or an equivalent qualification or a course equivalent to SLQL 2 (Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework) or NVQL 4 (National Vocational Qualification)

And

a. A credit pass for English at GCE (O/L)
or
b. Basic or Professional English Certificate from a recognized university
or
c. A pass at the National Certificate in English (NCE)
or
d. A pass for General English at the GCE (A/L)
or
e. A pass at the compulsory English examination conducted by a university as a requirement for the award of a degree.
or
f. A degree in English medium from a recognized university.
Or
g. Any other qualification, the Board of Studies may, on case by case evaluation, consider suitable, and acceptable to the Senate

Selection Criteria:

In addition to the required qualifications, the candidates under Section B should pass the written Selection Test and the Oral Test conducted by the Department of English Language Teaching of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

Evaluation Criteria

The students are evaluated through Continuous Assessment Tests and End Semester Examinations. The marks obtained in the continuous assessment tests will be incorporated to the final marks obtained for each subject according to the following proportion.

Continuous Assessment - 30%
End Semester Examination -70%

Attendance:

The students are expected to attend a minimum of 80% of the study sessions conducted in each semester in order to be eligible to sit the End Semester Examination.

Diploma in Information Communication Technology (Extension) Programme

The faculty of Applied sciences is intending to conduct a Diploma in ICT (Extension) course to enhance the opportunities for further ICT education for those who already possess basic qualifications and are in need of higher qualifications in ICT. This programme will be a 1 (one) year programme. After successful completion of the programme, participants should be able:

a) To make available opportunities to those who aspire to further enhance their basic ICT knowledge.
b) To help participants to improve their competence, self-confidence and skills in the application of ICT in various disciplines.
c) To encourage participants to pursue ICT courses with international recognition such as ACS, BCS etc. by providing a strong theoretical and practical background.
d) To provide an opportunity for the participants to obtain a Diploma Level University ICT qualification for their promotional prospects.
e) To produce personnel sufficiently skilled to handle ICT requirements of small and medium scale enterprises effectively.

The Diploma course in Tamil language is a one-year weekend course designed for those employed in the public and private sectors and also for school leavers. The course provides the necessary Tamil language communication skills for those in employment who lack working ability in Tamil Language.

The Department of Environmental Management, Faculty of Social sciences and Huminities has identified the need for improving environmental concerns of the workforce of the country in order to meet the present and future environmental challenges. This diploma is designed to partially address the above issue. It is imperative that youth with Advanced Level qualifications do not possess adequate opportunities to gain higher qualifications. The Department was mindful of designing the diploma program, opening up a window to enter higher education. Further, the diploma program offers an opportunity to improve environmental friendly attitudes, which is an essential ingredient of education in the 21st century. It is expected that this diploma holders will contribute to the nation by making changes in their workplace making more environmentally sound and dissemination of knowledge. This study program is based on environmental management and appropriate cutting-edge knowledge and professional skills. The course units’ contents, practices and guided learning assignments, and intended learning outcomes are designed to provide professionalism and skills essential for successful fulfilment of any responsible position in the 21st century in both public and private institutions.

Aims of the diploma programme

The aim of this diploma programme is to provide knowledge, skills, competencies, and attitudes of participants on environmental management, which will definitely aid to improve environmental efficiency and effectiveness of various functions in the workplace and to improve job performance of participants by reflecting the outcome in individual actions and in making awareness among common public in relation to understand and act on environmental issues.

Intended learning outcomes of the diploma

Upon the completion of this diploma program the participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of environmental management relevant to middle-level personnel in policy, research, development, and management sectors, which will contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals of institutions.
• Develop the skill of analyzing environmental issues in various sectors of the economy, society, and the environment.
• Inculcate environmental friendly attitudes, values, and ethics.

Duration and the nature of the program

The diploma in environmental management program consists of 30 credits and offered within one academic year divided into two semesters on a part-time basis. The study program consists of foundation modules and well as core modules. This is a 30 credit taught study program including independent projects which meets the requirement of SLQF 3 (NVQL5). This program will qualify a candidate to follow courses of SLQF4 - National Higher Diploma and Higher Diploma (NVQL6).
